Many of us have a favorite hymn or hymns. I have mine. My all-time favorite hymn isĀ Come Thou Fount. So what’s yours? We want to know what you like and why you like it. Does the hymn appeal to you because of the music, the lyrics, its history, or a combination of the three? We’re especially on the look-out for hymns that have special meaning for those of you out there who listen to us and to other groups like us.
If the lyrics of a particular hymn strike you – pierces straight to your heart – but you’re not sold on its music, we’d like a crack at changing up the melody and/or music and see if you like what we come up with. Favorite? Wow, that’s hard. Probably “God of Earth and Outer Space.”
Ok, no not really. If I had to pick one, it would be “There is a Fountain Filled with Blood.” Maybe it’s the mix of gothic content with that old jangling American camp tune that still stands the test of time. Or the confidence and victory in words like “Thy precious blood shall never lose its pow’r till all the ransomed church of God be saved, to sin no more.” I can’t put my finger on it. I just know that as I’m brought back to this tune over and over when I thumb through the old Baptism hymnal I have from the church I grew up in, I’m reminded that “redeeming love has been my theme, and shall be till I die.” And that’s powerful enough for me.
